In the book Speak we see trees throughout the book as symbols. Throughout the art class and Melindas freshman year, trees appear many different times in the book. Trees are used to describe different characters in the book and used for Melinda to announce to the world what she is feeling. The book reminds us that art is a beautiful thing and it can be used to let our feelings out when we cannot speak about matters.
A tree is a perfect symbol for what Melinda is going through. Something tragic happened to Melinda and she is having a difficult time trying to get through it. It's starting to show that Melinda is going to prevail in these hard times. A tree will always grow back, and you have a feeling that Melinda is going to grow back as a person after getting raped.
